Why are flight attendants’ rates of cancer spiking? Disrupted sleep and radiation may be to blame

Why are flight attendants’ rates of cancer spiking? Disrupted sleep and radiation may be to blame

Health
Being a flight attendant has its bonuses, like getting to travel the world for free, meet new people, and earn well above the average American salary. But it’s not all free snacks and flights to Paris. The job comes with some costs too—like erratic schedules, aggressive passengers, and significant delays. But those, while frustrating, may be the tip of the iceberg. This week, new research is boosting concerns about an even more severe hazard: the increased risk of cancer. The study, published in the journal Environmental Science, is the second wave of a 2007 Harvard Flight Attendant Health Survey aimed at analyzing how “occupational exposures impact the health of flight attendants.”  The initial 2007 study analyzed the general h...
Dog is man’s best friend, know why

Dog is man’s best friend, know why

Health
Washington D.C. [USA], June 28 (ANI): Interestingly dogs are known to be man's best friend and the faithful companions on whom a human can depend upon. They live with us, play with us and even sleep with us. But how did a once fearsome wolf-like animal evolved over tens of thousands of years to become beloved members of a family? Through the power of genomics, scientists at the University of Michigan compared the DNA of a dog and wolf to identify the genes involved in domestication. The research identified that in some places the DNAs didn't appear to match. The researchers used statistical methods to tease out genetic changes of ancient dogs and wolves, found at burial sites from around 5,000 years ago. It resulted from humans' first efforts at domestication from those associat...

Mild sleep problems may up blood pressure in women

Health
Women, please take note. Even if you are having mild sleep problems, such as having trouble falling asleep, it can raise your blood pressure, a new study suggests. The study found that women who had mild sleep problems - including those who slept for seven to nine hours a night, as measured by a wristwatch-like device - were significantly more likely to have elevated blood pressure. The researchers also found an association between endothelial inflammation and mild sleep disturbances. "Our findings suggest that mild sleep problems could possibly initiate the vascular endothelial inflammation that's a significant contributor to cardiovascular disease," said lead author Brooke Aggarwal from the Columbia University Irving Medical Center. According to the researchers, nearly one-t...

World’s fattest child who weighed 237 kg loses 63 kg in months following surgery

Health
Obesity is a major health concern across the globe and some people face extreme consequences due to it. While many people are concerned about weight, for some it can be severely damaging. The world’s fattest child who weighed over 237 kg at the age of 14 has now started his road to recovery. Mihir Jain from Delhi lost 63 kg since his gastric bypass surgery in April and now weighs 172 kg.   While he was born as an average child, Mihir ballooned over the years due to a diet of fried foods and fizzy drinks. His weight had grown to 80 kg by the time he was five but his family preferred medication to surgery back then as he was too young. But instead of helping, side effects from medicines made Mihir weak on his legs. Although his mother says addiction to fried food is c...

Walnuts are the superfood you need to ward off diabetes

Walnuts are the superfood you need to ward off diabetes

Health
NEW YORK: Consuming walnuts - rich in antioxidants - may nearly halve the risk of developing Type-2 diabetes compared to those who do not eat nuts, finds a study representing more than 34,000 adults. The findings showed doubling walnut consumption (or eating 3 tablespoons) was associated with a 47 per cent lower prevalence of Type-2 diabetes. "The strong connection between walnut consumers and lower prevalence of Type-2 diabetes is additional justification for including walnuts in the diet. Other research has shown that walnuts may also be beneficial for cognitive function and heart health," said Lenore Arab from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). For the study, the team looked at 34,121 adults aged 18-85 years who were asked about their dietary intake as well as if ...
